Clear Lake Environmental Research Center: July 2023 |
We serve as a steward for environmental and economic sustainability of Clear Lake, its neighboring lands and waters, local communities, and beyond. |
CLERC has had a very busy year. We have been working on several new projects and plan on hiring new staff to help implement these projects. We keep on growing and the projects keep on coming! |
This past year we have also been working through a strategic planning process. Through this process we were able to dive deep into what the community needed, and what we could provide. It will not always be a straight path forward, but as long as we focus on our goals and keep our eye on our vision, we see a future where conservation of our ecosystems creates economic resiliency, community connections, and collaborative partnerships.
We would like to thank the dozens of community members that supported and contributed to helping us strategize our future. THANK YOU! |

Community Chipping Program Update |
This May we launched a county wide chipping program. Thus far we have chipped over 40 properties with 4 more communities planned! We are still in our pilot phase of this project, but it is clear to us that it is a huge success and very necessary.
CLERC is administering the project and the Hogback Ridge Fuels Crew, (a subdivision of the Northshore Fire Protection District) is implementing the project. |
If you are interested in having chipping done in your community check out our website and fill out our chipping request form. We require at least 6 properties from a local community to fill out the chipping request form for the crew to chip that area. Each request submitted has a maximum of 1hr worth of chipping work that can be done on that property. It is important that we spread the work out so that everybody has a chance to benefit from this free service.
CLERC is hiring a Fire and Forestry Project Coordinator! Join our Fire and Forestry program and help CLERC manage a series of community-wide grant-funded forestry projects that focus on fuel reduction, reforestation, prescribed fire, prioritization planning, workforce development, and community involvement! This is a unique opportunity to work directly with a rapidly growing non-profit doing meaningful work while living in a beautiful county. |
On August 11, 2023 CLERC is going to have a open house type event in Library Park, Lakeport. This event will be from 5pm-7pm which is before and during the Free Concert in the park series. Meet the CLERC staff and board of directors. We invite all of our partners, contractors and friends to attend and mingle. More information to come soon on Partners in the Park! |
CLERC is making a positive impact in our community find out how you can make a difference too! Stay tuned.... |

Livingston Stone Monthly Observations |
This year we celebrate 150 years since Livingston Stone visited Clear Lake and documented the seasons of the lake, the fish species and their abundant populations. This year we will be have all of his observation month to month in each of our E-Newsletters |
Hitch, chy (silver sides), shapaulle (Sacramento pike or the California white-fish), and suckers abound in the creeks. This is the best month for catching shapaulle. Perch, shapaulle, hitch and chy are caught in the lake with hook and line this month. Black fish are abundant. - Livingston Stone April Observations 1873 |
The first of May is about the best time for catching perch. In respect to the other fish, this month is very much like the last - Livingston Stone May Observations 1873 |
The larger part of the fish which have gone up the creeks in such vast numbers have returned to the lake by this time. They have also left the sand-beaches and tules where they have been spawning, and have returned to deep water. Most kinds of the Clear Lake fish can be caught in the lake during this month with hook and line; more perch being caught, however, than any other species. The Indians go this mouth to the cold feeding-springs of the lake to catch trout with the nets. - Livingston Stone June Observations 1873
